Gold Coast, Chicago homes, condos and co-ops

The neighborhood took shape after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Lake Shore Drive opened from North Avenue to Oak Street in 1875, and in 1882 Potter Palmer began building a castle-like mansion on the Drive between Banks and Schiller. Within a few years, large houses were lining both the Drive and Astor Street. Apartment buildings came next, then 1920s high-rises, then the towers of the 1960s through 1980s. The Gold Coast Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

That layering is why Gold Coast real estate covers so much ground for a neighborhood this compact. On one walk you can pass:

• Mansions and row houses on Astor Street, State Parkway, Dearborn Street and Schiller Street. Many date from the 1880s and 1890s, in a variety of historical revival styles.
• Greystones and brick row houses, some kept as single homes and some divided into condos.
• Vintage high-rises from the 1920s, with stone trim, smaller lobbies and fewer units per floor. Some are condominiums and some are cooperatives.
• Full-service towers along Lake Shore Drive and the side streets, most built between the 1960s and 1980s, with door staff, garages and lake or skyline views.

Condos and co-ops work differently. In a condo, you own your unit plus a share of the common areas. In a co-op, you buy shares in the corporation that owns the building, the board usually approves each buyer, and fewer lenders make co-op loans. Main streets and landmarks in the Gold Coast

Astor Street District. The City of Chicago designated the Astor Street District a Chicago Landmark on December 19, 1975. It covers the 1200 to 1600 blocks of Astor Street and nearby cross streets. The city describes 19th-century houses in a mix of revival styles, set among 20th-century apartment buildings and townhouses.

Charnley-Persky House. At 1365 N Astor St, on the corner of Schiller Street, this townhouse was designed by Louis Sullivan with a young Frank Lloyd Wright and finished in 1892. It's a National Historic Landmark and a Chicago Landmark. The Society of Architectural Historians owns it, uses it as its headquarters and runs tours.

The archbishop's residence. At North Avenue and State Parkway stands a red brick mansion built as the home of Chicago's Catholic archbishop. Its rows of chimneys make it one of the easiest buildings in the neighborhood to spot.

Three Arts Club. The Holabird & Roche building at 1300 N Dearborn St was built in 1914 and became a Chicago Landmark in 1981.

Washington Square Park and the Newberry Library. A few blocks southwest, at 901 N Clark St, Washington Square sits across Walton Street from the Newberry Library. It's one of Chicago's oldest parks and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Getting around: CTA and Lake Shore Drive

Red Line. The Clark/Division station is a subway stop at 1200 N Clark St, with entrances at Clark and Division and at LaSalle and Division (the LaSalle entrance is accessible). CTA lists bus connections to the #22, #36, #70 and #156.

Buses through the neighborhood:

• #22 Clark: stops on Clark Street at North Avenue, Goethe, Schiller, Burton, Division, Elm and Oak.
• #36 Broadway: runs on Clark Street from North Avenue to Division, then east on Division and south on State Street, with stops at State and Elm and at State and Oak.
• #151 Sheridan: stops along the Inner Drive at North Avenue, Burton, Schiller, Goethe, Scott, Division, Elm, Cedar and Oak.
• #156 LaSalle: stops on LaSalle Street, the neighborhood's west side, from North Avenue to Oak.
• #70 Division heads west on Division from Clark, and #72 North heads west on North Avenue from Clark.

Express buses. Routes #143, #146, #147 and #148 stop on Michigan Avenue at Delaware and at Chestnut, just south of Oak Street.

Driving. Lake Shore Drive has a full interchange at LaSalle Drive and North Avenue. At Michigan Avenue and Oak Street there's a southbound exit and a northbound entrance.

Parks, beaches and the lakefront

The lake is the Gold Coast's front yard.

• Oak Street Beach sits where Oak Street meets Lake Shore Drive, at the neighborhood's southeast corner. The beach began in the 1890s as part of a Lincoln Park Commission landfill and breakwater project.
• North Avenue Beach is a short walk north, at the foot of North Avenue.
• The Lakefront Trail runs along the shore past both beaches, south toward Navy Pier and north through Lincoln Park.
• Lincoln Park's main grounds begin across North Avenue, two blocks north of the Charnley-Persky House.
