Uptown is one of Chicago's 77 community areas, set on the lake on the city's North Side. It reaches from Foster Avenue down to Montrose Avenue and Irving Park Road, and from the shoreline west to Clark Street and Ravenswood Avenue. Within it are several smaller neighborhoods: Buena Park, Sheridan Park, Margate Park, the Argyle Street area and the Uptown side of Andersonville.
For anyone weighing Uptown Chicago real estate, the draw is range: historic entertainment venues, lakefront parkland, three Red Line stations and a housing stock that runs from 1890s houses to modern towers.

Uptown Chicago homes, condos and co-ops
Housing changes block by block:
- High-rise condo buildings along Marine Drive and Sheridan Road, many facing Lincoln Park and the lake
- Vintage courtyard buildings and six-flats, some converted to condos
- Greystones, 2-flats and other small multi-unit buildings
- Single-family homes, especially in Sheridan Park and on Buena Park's Hutchinson Street
- 1920s apartment hotels in Margate Park, some now condos or cooperatives
Several pockets carry historic designations. The Sheridan Park Historic District, established in 1985, recognizes the single-family homes and smaller multi-family buildings between Clark Street and Racine Avenue, and the city designated the Dover Street District as a Chicago Landmark in 2007. On Marine Drive, The Aquitania at 5000 N Marine Dr is a 1923 co-op listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Main streets and landmarks
Broadway is the commercial spine, with Sheridan Road, Marine Drive and Clark Street running parallel. Crosstown traffic moves on Foster, Lawrence, Wilson, Montrose and Irving Park. The heart of the area is Uptown Square near Broadway and Lawrence, a National Register historic district since 2000. Within about half a block of that corner stand the Uptown Theatre, the Aragon Ballroom, the Riviera Theatre and the Green Mill at 4802 N Broadway.
Argyle Street's restaurant and grocery corridor, recognized as the West Argyle Street Historic District, sits a few blocks north. Truman College and Graceland Cemetery, in the southwest corner, round out the major landmarks.

Parks, beaches and the lakefront
Lincoln Park runs the full length of Uptown's shoreline. Montrose Beach has a non-motorized boat launch, food concessions and kayak and volleyball rentals, with a dog beach on its northern stretch, and Montrose Harbor and the Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary are next door. Margate Park's fieldhouse has a gym and fitness center, plus a dog-friendly area and community garden outside. Clarendon Community Center Park adds athletic fields and a playground with water play, and Foster Beach sits at the northern edge.

How Daniel helps buyers and sellers in Uptown
Buying: Uptown offers condos, co-ops and multi-unit buildings, and each one calls for different homework. Daniel reviews association budgets, reserves, special assessments and leasing rules, explains how co-op board approval and share financing differ from a condo purchase, and helps you assess the leases and mechanical systems of a 2-flat. For homes in a landmark district, he flags the permit review that exterior changes require. See how his buyer representation works.
Selling: An Uptown condo is compared most closely with units in the same building or on the same stretch of Marine Drive or Sheridan Road. Daniel prices from matched MLS sales, prepares the home for showings and markets it to buyers searching the North Side lakefront. Learn about his seller representation, or request a free home valuation.
